“Dio ride”: Giovanni Veronesi explores the power of humour between faith and authority
Can laughter challenge authority? This is the central theme of Dio ride, the new film by Giovanni Veronesi, released in Italian cinemas on October 29 after its presentation at the Venice Film Festival.
Set in the 17th century and loosely inspired by true events, the story follows Friar Leopoldo da Casamacchia, played by Pierfrancesco Favino, who chooses to spread the Gospel through simple words, joy and humour.
His unconventional preaching attracts the attention of the Church, which assigns the case to Cardinal Maculani, played by Silvio Orlando.
With Dio ride, Veronesi explores faith, authority and freedom, turning laughter into a way of challenging conventions.
A story that reminds us how humour, even in the most serious situations, can become an expression of freedom and an invitation to reflect.
